Mexico and Jamaica play out dull, goalless draw at Gold Cup

17 Julio 2017

In the first match, El Salvador beat Curacao 2-0 to improve to 1-1 in pool play.

Mexico will next face Honduras on Thursday in Phoenix, Arizona with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.

Jamaica have already qualified for the quarter-finals but need at least a draw to guarantee one of two automatic berths.

Nelson Bonilla handed El Salvador a 15th minute lead when he latched onto a Ruben Marroquin pass and netted from a narrow angle.

Costa Rica and Mexico also had their hardships with draws against the teams that eventually finished second in their groups.

Torres again had a chance in the 24th minute.

Mexico has also left its biggest stars at home, but that hasn't stopped the squad from outscoring opponents 5-1 in three matches.

With the introduction of Owayne Gordon for Cory Burke at the start of the second half, the Jamaicans looked more purposeful.

Jamaica drew level from the penalty spot with 64 minutes played, after Narciso Orellana's handball.

The game plan worked, and now both teams are in a position to move to the next round if they can take care of business this weekend.

"The fans bought the tickets, they came out to watch a team win and perform well, so we understand their frustration", Mexico assistant coach Luis Pompilio Paez said.

"I'm very disappointed as the team started out a bit slow against El Salvador".

When quizzed about whether he was concerned about his job as coach, Whitmore, who is a former Reggae Boyz captain, responded: "I am not under no pressure (as coach). We will leave that up to the Federation". "I like looking for the players in the area".

That may not seem difficult as Curacao is not one of the giants of the sport.

Raul Lopez burst clear down the right and crossed to the back post, where Sepulveda headed into the bottom corner.

Burke left the game on a stretcher in the 87th minute after a collision near midfield.

Goalkeeper Jose Corona starred with numerous strong saves as Curacao - who finish the tournament without a point - threatened often. The team's defense has been weakened with Cuco Martina leaving the tournament to sign with Everton and a few other players not available. How many will be made?
