The Ryzen Threadripper box is bigger than a mini-ITX PC

While AMD's chipset names are obviously meant to one-up the Intel offerings, they make things much more confusing for new builders trying to buy compatible components.

Q2 revenue surpassed the expectations of both the Street and what AMD had predicted. It was not a mind-blowing quarter, but it was a solid one for what has been a slowly sinking AMD. The super-size-me approach apparently extends to the box as well, which appears to be the size of a moderate mini-ITX PC. It seems like a somewhat unfair comparison at first glance, because surely it should be Ryzen 7 vs Core i7, right? Intel started cutting the prices of its processors in Q1 to claw back market share from AMD, which could lead to weaker revenue and margins. The enterprise, embedded and semi-custom unit saw revenue fall 5 percent to $563 million in the second quarter. Storage includes 8 SATA III ports, a single U.2 port, dual USB 3.0 ports and we can also spot a 6-Pin power connector to juice up the expansion slots when running multiple array of discrete graphics cards. Non-GAAP net income came in at a positive $19M.

AMD has received a boost from cryptocurrency mining this year. Furthermore it has 22.50MB of L3 cache, 16MB of L2 cache, bringing us to a total of 38.50MB of cache.

I asked Su about how Intel has touted the way Xeon is tailored more this time around for specific workloads in cloud computing. This is primarily due to seasonal weaknesses with the consoles. Microsoft will be ramping up production of their Xbox One X and AMD will start to receive royalties from that production later this year.

AMD's second quarter results were better than expected as it saw strong demand for its computing and graphics processors. Revenue from that group has increased by 51% since last year. Whilst the 1950X is the top of the range processor, a 16 core, 32 thread monster with a 3.4 GHz base clock and a 4.0 GHz boost for just $999. "The products are significantly stronger".

Since the score of the AMD Threadripper 1950X processor is quite close to the Ryzen 7 1800X, we believe there is still some potential slumbering in those chips. The motherboards can support memory speeds of up to 3600 MHz (OC+). AMD will continue with the Ryzen R7 and R5 parts, but will also introduce the first R3 parts for the budget market. RX Vega will be introduced next week at Siggraph. It will be interesting to see if that has an effect on sales, as despite these being monstrously powerful chips, at the $1,000 mark they aren't going to sell a tonne.
