Google Android O stable version could roll out on August 21

12 Agosto 2017

That's a week on Monday, which happens to be solar eclipse day in the U.S. - very smart of Google to organize a celestial show of wonder to help celebrate the launch. Android O basically places specific limits in location updates, background services and implicit broadcasts. Ruddock also says Google is planning "some degree of spectacle" in revealing the final name of Android O, and won't simply be a reveal of a new Android statue on Google's headquarters in Mountain View.

The latest incarnation of the world's most popular smartphone operating system is expected to bring a raft of new features, although they aren't necessarily the attention grabbing features that we have become used to in past releases.

Google was supposed to release the Android 8.0 update for Pixel phones by mid-August, various reports from trustworthy sources claimed, but it appears that the upgrade was delayed.

For unread notifications, it will show badges as dots.

Tinkerers using the Raspberry Pi 3 will also find that Android Things Dev Preview 5 also now supports OpenGL ES 2.0 and WebView, a much requested feature. Picture-in-picture mode, on the other hand, will let users watch video on top of other app windows. Android O succeeds the company's current-generation mobile OS, Android Nougat. Other Android O features include an Autofill API, battery life improvements, and improved Bluetooth audio.

The double tap to zoom features is coming to the Google Camera via a new update which should already be rolling out to users of the app.

This unconfirmed new rumor claims that the Pixel smartphones won't be getting the new Android O update in the mid-august.

Since this is still a Developer Preview, there are a few known bugs.

Android Things is a minimal version of Android, meant to power Internet of Things devices (like smart appliances).
