White Sox top Giants

11 Setiembre 2017

Abreu connected for two home runs a day after hitting for the cycle and Fulmer earned his first major league win as a starter as the White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 8-1 on Sunday in an interleague matchup of last-place teams.

The Giants struggled in all areas in Saturday's 13-1 loss at the Chicago White Sox with starter Jeff Samardzija charged with six runs on eight hits including four long balls over 5.2 frames before Josh Osich and Roberto Gomez combined to allow seven runs. The Giants (56-89) lost two of three in the series and dipped below the White Sox for the second worst record in the major leagues. The last time was all the way back on April 27, 2000, when Jose Valentin pulled it off. Further, Major League Baseball announced that this was the seventh time a player has hit for the cycle in 2017. He came out blazing, striking out six in the first three innings.

When September doesn't mean a pennant race, it becomes evaluation time for a team - and perhaps the best month to evaluate up-and-coming talent. Since that series, the White Sox are 6-1 in seven games played against San Francisco.

"I was able to get ahead of guys in the count and get guys swinging, " he said.

The White Sox, last in the American League, won their second interleague series of the season after beating the San Diego Padres in mid-May.

The San Francisco Giants had hoped to climb out of the NL West basement but the team can not generate anything positive.

And yet cruelly, the evidence continues to pile up.

Bumgarner (3-8) gave up six earned runs and 10 hits in five innings - the most runs and hits he's allowed in a game this season.

"I felt pretty good, honestly". Hammel pitched at least six innings in each of his last five starts and at least five innings in his last 18.

"I really don't know what to do there", Bumgarner said.

Between what Renteria and Fulmer said, it sounds like what Fulmer does the rest of this season will be viewed as a tryout. For us to be able to see him and see what he's capable of doing hopefully for the next couple of starts and maybe he gets a lot more beneift out of it. For us, putting our eyes on him in September is a little bit better than doing it in the spring.

"I've worked my whole life to get here and I'm a competitor", Fulmer said.

NOTES: Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he considered having starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner be the designated hitter.
