We will update this post as more information becomes available.

This makes it the most sustained category 5 storm and the second most sustained major hurricane in the satellite era (starting in 1966), trailing behind Ivan in 2004.

Hurricane Jose skirted the Bahamas and spun back out to sea on Monday but global weather models forecast Jose to continue to spin in the Atlantic for the next couple of days before heading along a track that would have him making landfall along the coast of North Carolina on Tuesday or Wednesday, Sept. 19 or 20. Communication and access were cut and authorities dangled only vague assessments of ruinous impact. He urged people to be careful and safe.

"We're hunkered down and riding it out at the moment", Mr Cronin said. The mom was in critical condition. The storm ruined Barbuda, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as a Category 5 hurricane.

Warnings of storm surges remained in place in several areas of south and central Florida, including the heavily populated Tampa Bay region. In China, high-end phones from other brands have been gaining ground by undercutting Apple on price. At least 35 people were killed in the Caribbean.

The Pasco Sheriff's office also apparently thought it was necessary to tweet out a reminder to its citizens not to shoot at the hurricane, in case you were worried that Floridians were taking this seriously. "It is because of their work we are able to live in a state where people can raise their families safely", he said in a statement. "I don't think any utility in the country has".

The third fatality was confirmed in Orange County when a person driving a Cadillac SUV hit a guardrail on southbound State Road 417.

In Bonita Springs, on Florida's hard-hit southwest coast, large areas were flooded and the entire city was without power.

Around the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, where Irma rolled through early Monday, damage appeared modest. He also wrote about his love of the island and memories of the territory's struggles to recover from past hurricanes. Scott, the governor, said he had received "spotty reports".

Rescuers used boats, water scooters and even surfboards to get to residents surprised by the rising waters, said Kimberly Morgan, a spokeswoman for the Clay County emergency center.

He said the Navy dispatched the USS Iwo Jima, USS New York and the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to help with relief efforts.

Emergency managers in the islands declared Monday "the Keys are not open for business" and warned that there was no fuel, electricity, running water or cell service and that supplies were low and anxiety high.

"HELP IS ON THE WAY", they promised on Facebook.

Just two days before Irma skirted Puerto Rico, Iniciativa Comunitaria, a 25-year-old organization focused on community uplift whose motto translates to "we are a big hug", opened a shelter on the island to take in displaced people. Conjuring images of surprise floods and electrocution by downed power lines, they asked residents not to misinterpret their state's less-severe-than-expected ordeal as a sign that life could quickly and easily snap back to normality.

Five storm-related deaths have reported so far in the US state, after Irma crossed ten Caribbean countries and territories, killing at least 28 people. "The St. Johns River has not seen these flooding levels since 1846", the City of Jacksonville tweeted. "Search and rescue teams are ready to deploy".

A tropical storm warning was issued for the first time ever in Atlanta, and school was canceled in communities around the state. "Water is up to the mailbox level in some neighborhoods".
