Take it easy: Smoke from Northern California fires is choking Valley air

Winds are calmer in the valley Tuesday, bringing in less smoke from the more than 10 fires across Northern California.

Smoke from fires can cause lung disease, asthma attacks and increase the risks of heart attacks and strokes, Valley Air officials said.

Air quality managers said the Bay Area has had poor air quality days before because of wildfires but this is unprecedented because of the amount of fires concentrated in one location.

Would the Chargers - or Raiders, for that matter - be interested in changing their home-and-home series sites this late and having their Dec. 31 game, scheduled for Carson, moved to Oakland?

Residents living dozens of miles from the fire zone, including San Francisco and San Jose, have complained about the smell of smoke since the fires broke out late Sunday night.

The dirtiest air readings in the region were recorded in San Rafael, Sebastopol, Vallejo, San Pablo, Oakland, Berkeley and Oakland. Outside of the active fire areas, air quality will be variable and unpredictable.

The Bay Area's seven major professional sports organizations have untied to donate a combined $450,000 to the North Bay fire relief efforts, according to a press release.

If you cannot keep windows and doors closed due to high temperatures, seek out cooling centers in your area. Toward the North Bay area, air conditions are worse, specifically around Napa and Santa Rosa.

"Please curtail wood burning, lawn mowing and leaf blowing, driving, and BBQing", says a tweet care of San Francisco-based Spare the Air, an environmental agency. Disposable respirators known as N-95 or P-100 respirators will help if you have to be outdoors for a period of time. Could desperate times lead them back for a last-minute, one-game reunion on the field where Howie Long and Marcus Allen once reigned supreme?

School has been canceled for the Fairfield-Suisun School District for the rest of the week.
