Israel warns Gaza militants against revenge attack

14 Noviembre 2017

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at Israel's weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, "There are those who still amuse themselves these days by trying to renew attacks against Israel".

The Iron Dome system, which is created to shoot down short-range rockets and, in some cases, mortars was deployed to counter the threats made by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, which has vowed to avenge its members killed in the tunnel blast and its aftermath. "We will take a very strong hand against anyone who tries to attack us or attacks us from any sector".

Tension has increased between Israel and PIJ after the IDF destroyed a tunnel in Israeli territory which had been dug by the PIJ.

"In any case, we hold Hamas responsible for any attack against us originating from Gaza or organised there", he said of the group that runs the Gaza Strip.

Islamic Jihad, on their part, has sent instructions to their followers to commit a major terrorist attack against Israel as soon as possible.

Netanyahu's remarks came on the heels of a Saturday night Arabic-language video issued by Major General Yoav Mordechai, head of a defence ministry unit responsible for activities in the Palestinian territories. "They are playing with fire at the expense of Gazan residents, the Palestinian reconciliation efforts and the stability of the entire region", he said. We advise the Islamic Jihad leadership in Damascus to exercise caution and to take control of the situation. The Gaza-based group also has presence in the West Bank.

The Gaza front has been relatively peaceful for Israel since 2014 when more than 2100 Palestinians and 70 Israelis were killed in a 50-day war.

The heated rhetoric comes at a sensitive time in Palestinian politics after a recent landmark reconciliation deal between rivals Fatah and Hamas.
