Paris: Manchester United and Liverpool are among the teams bidding to book their places in the Champions League knockout stage this week, while Atletico Madrid appear set to bow out of the competition. Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City have already progressed with a game to spare and Liverpool and Manchester United can make it five by securing their places over the next couple of days.
Some targets may be more attainable than others, but that won't stop English clubs opening their wallets in the New Year.

Germany's fourth team, Hoffenheim, missed the group stage after losing in the playoffs to Liverpool.
The Premier League side equalised in the 64th minute when Lukaku ended his goal drought, showing great strength to hold off his marker before firing a left-footed shot home.
Manchester United top the group with 12 points, three clear of FC Basel and CSKA Moscow, and will finish as group winners with a draw at home to the Russian side.
Who's into the knockout stage?
All eyes will be on Monday's draw as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham plot a route to the final in Kiev on 26 May 2018.
PSG will be the happier side at winning the group, although possible last-16 opponents for them are Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid. Athletico Madrid can still qualify, but they will have to win at Chelsea and hope that Roma drops points to Qarabag.
Teams from the same group or country can not be drawn against one another.
Barcelona take on Sporting at Camp Nou with top spot already secured.
Pot 1 as it stands (club coefficient ranking): Manchester United (14), Paris Saint-Germain (6), Roma (30), Barcelona (3), *Liverpool (32), *Manchester City (8), *Besiktas (28), *Tottenham Hotspur (21).
Which teams can still qualify for the Champions League Round of 16?
Chelsea: Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Besiktas, Spartak Moscow or Sevilla. If Spartak win they will finish top unless Sevilla also win.
The draw looks a big runner at 12/5 when Manchester City head to Shakhtar Donetsk this week.
These restrictions are removed ahead of the quarter-finals.
Seeded group winners will be away in the round of 16 first legs on 13/14 and 20/21 February and at home in the return matches on 6/7 and 13/14 March.
