Chelsea Manning Files For Senate Run In Maryland

14 Enero 2018

Chelsea Manning, the former US intelligence analyst who was jailed for leaking classified documents, is seeking the Democratic Party nomination to run for the US senate in Maryland.

Chelsea Manning attends an event by OUT Magazine in New York City on Nov. 9, 2017.

Manning said she shared the documents to spark public debate about US foreign policy, but US officials said the release of material put lives at risk.

According to an FEC statement of candidacy form dated Thursday, Manning has filed to run as Democrat in the 2018 midterm elections, challenging incumbent Sen.

Manning, 30, is planning to run as a Democrat, according to the federal election filings obtained by the Washington Post. Ben Cardin, who has served two terms in the Senate and is up for re-election in November.

When Manning was released in May, she said that she was eager to define her future - but made no mention of politics. President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence last year, and she was released after serving seven years.

Representatives for Cardin did not immediately return calls for comment Saturday.

Manning was sent to prison after a 2013 espionage conviction for leaking classified documents to Wikileaks.

Since her release Manning has remained active on social media, and has continued to discuss issues such as government transparency, free speech and transgender rights.

Manning would not be the first transgender candidate to challenge a sitting member of Congress.

The polemic figure was originally sentenced to 35 years in prison.

It's not entirely clear what Manning's political agenda may look like, though she definitely tends to sympathize with progressive causes. During his career in the senate, Cardin has frequently advocated restoring voting rights to felons. When reports broke last week that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were raiding 7-11 stores, Manning called the agency "the new Gestapo". His campaign war chest already boasts funds upwards of $2 million. People are telling me that they want the country to come together and that they are tired of the partisanship.
