Comey says Trump 'morally unfit' for office

16 Abril 2018

Although James Comey is not the first person to make the allegation, he's certainly one of the most prominent. This president is not able to do that.

He replied: "I don't remember spelling it out, but it had to have been".

Mr Comey's televised remarks, coupled with the release of his forthcoming book, offer his version of events surrounding his firing and the investigations into Russian election meddling and Hillary Clinton's email practices. "This president does not reflect the values of this country". Depending on what else was discussed, the call could be problematic, as lawyers typically advise their clients against discussing investigations. Is Donald Trump unfit to be president? "Whether there's fire, I didn't stay long enough to know". The former FBI Director said that he was "actually nervous" to meet Trump in person.

"These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a president of the United States, but it's possible", he said.

Earlier, he told Stephanopoulos that Trump might "possibly" have been "obstructing justice" when the president allegedly asked the then-FBI director to go easy on former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

When they first met, Trump didn't ask him any questions about Russian actions after it was clear that they had interfered in the election.

Comey says he was just as surprised as everyone else that he was fired in the middle of an important ongoing investigation: "I thought it's crazy to fire me. This president is not able to do that", he said, according to AFP report.

He later added that a Trump impeachment would let the American people "off the hook", stressing that he believes the president doesn't represent American values. "I hope folks read the whole thing and find it useful". Flynn has since pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia's ambassador and is now cooperating with the Mueller investigation.

"I just fired the head of the FBI".

In a clip from the ABC interview released on Saturday, Comey said his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election was a factor in his decision to disclose the investigation into her use of a private email server as secretary of state. That claim has come under scrutiny after texts were discovered between top FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. I confess I stared at it pretty closely and my reaction was 'it must take a lot of time in the morning. "And so in its place has to be a fear that if you lie and the government can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, they will prosecute you in order to send a message to all the others who might be called upon to give evidence", Comey said.

The jumble of references appeared to allude to unsubstantiated accusations Trump has previously made claiming Comey lied in Senate testimony last May in denying he had served as an anonymous news source.

As he has in the past, Comey offered a vigorous defence of his handling of the Clinton email investigation. Schiller testified that he stood outside Trump's hotel room for a time and then went to bed. His "memos" are self serving and FAKE!' I'm not trying to, by the way, suggest that President Trump is out breaking legs and-you know, shaking down shopkeepers. "I think he's morally unfit to be president", he said.

When Trump fired Comey in May 2017, the administration cited a memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein criticizing Comey's handling of the inquiry into Clinton's email server.

Comey previously worked for the US Attorney's Office in New York from 1987 to 1993, during which time he helped prosecute the famous Gambino crime family in New York.
